Our Story · Since 2022

The Internet Deserves
Honest Rankings.

We started WhichRanks because picking between two brands shouldn't require eight tabs, six affiliate-loaded review sites, and a Reddit deep-dive. We compare brands the way you'd want a knowledgeable friend to compare them — clearly, honestly, and with current pricing.

"We built the comparison site we couldn't find."

Why WhichRanks Exists.

It started with a mattress. In late 2022, our founder spent 11 hours trying to decide between two well-known DTC mattress brands. Every review site looked identical: the same five "winners," the same affiliate links, the same suspiciously glowing verdicts.

The breaking point came when three "best of" lists picked the same brand as #1 — and all three pages had the same affiliate disclosure tied to that brand. The recommendations weren't recommendations. They were paid placements with a thin coat of editorial paint.

"If we wanted the truth, we had to build the comparison site we couldn't find — one that tested products honestly, listed real prices, and called the winner based on the work, not the commission."

Today, WhichRanks is the rankings home of millions of readers across 15+ categories — from VPNs and eCommerce platforms to mattresses and sneakers. The mission hasn't changed: honest verdicts, current pricing, no shortcuts.

Built On Three Promises.

We help people make smarter buying decisions, faster — by testing brands ourselves, publishing current pricing, and writing the verdict the way we'd tell a friend.

Every comparison on WhichRanks goes through our four-step testing process. Every price reflects what you'd actually pay today. Every verdict survives the question: would we recommend this to our own family?

The Four Values Behind Every Page.

These aren't marketing slogans on a "Values" slide. They're the rules our editorial team actually follows — and the standards we hold every single comparison to before it goes live.

H

Honesty First.

We say what we'd say to a friend. If the cheaper option is the better pick, we say so — even when it costs us an affiliate commission. The truth is more valuable than the click.

T

Real Testing.

We buy products. We sign up for SaaS trials. We use brands ourselves. No press kits, no curated demos. Our verdicts come from actual hands-on experience — not vendor talking points.

U

Up-to-Date Pricing.

Every comparison reflects current 2026 pricing — verified against the brand's official site within 30 days. We update aggressively when prices shift, because stale pricing wastes your time.

I

Editorial Independence.

Brands cannot pay for better rankings. Period. Affiliate partnerships exist (we mark them clearly), but they never decide who wins. Our editorial policy is public.

From One Mattress Review
To 500+ Brands Tested.

Three years, six categories at launch, fifteen-plus today. Here's how WhichRanks grew from a frustrated weekend project to a comparison library trusted by millions of readers each year.

2022

The First Review.

WhichRanks launched in November 2022 with a single category — mattresses — and seven brands tested across foam, hybrid, and luxury tiers. The site fit on three pages. The mission was already clear: real testing, honest verdicts, current pricing.

2023

Expanding To Tech & Travel.

Six new categories launched: VPNs, web hosting, flight booking, hotels, cloud storage, and email marketing. We crossed 250K monthly readers and added our first three full-time editors.

2024

The Comparison Hub Era.

We launched head-to-head brand comparisons — the format that became our most-read content. Shopify vs WooCommerce. NordVPN vs ExpressVPN. Nike vs Adidas. Side-by-side, with the math shown. The library grew to 15+ comparisons by year-end.

2025

Crossing 2 Million Readers.

Fashion, broadband, sneakers, and bus booking categories launched. We crossed 2M annual readers, published our methodology publicly, and earned our first major media citations. The mattress origin became a running joke at team offsites.

2026

15+ Categories, Counting.

Today, WhichRanks covers 15+ categories with 500+ brands reviewed and 22+ head-to-head comparisons. We added analytics, project management, and lifestyle. The team is twelve people. The mission is the same as day one.

The Four Steps Behind Every Ranking.

Every brand on this site goes through the same process. No shortcuts, no exceptions. Read the full methodology for the deep version — or get the summary right here.

01

Hands-On Testing.

We buy, install, or trial every brand ourselves. No press kits, no curated demos. We use products the way you would — and write what we find.

02

Verify Current Pricing.

Every price on every page is cross-checked against the brand's official site within the last 30 days. Promotional, annual, and renewal rates all listed when relevant.

03

Score Across 8 Axes.

Value, performance, ease-of-use, support, features, design, reliability, and trust. Each brand gets a weighted score — and the math is shown, not hidden.

04

Independent Verdict.

The winner is the winner — even if a higher-commission brand came in second. Our rankings are sold to nobody. Read our editorial policy.

The People Behind The Rankings.

Twelve full-time editors, researchers, and product testers across four time zones. Every category on WhichRanks is owned by a category lead with real industry experience — not a generalist with an SEO outline.

How We Make Money
(And Why It Won't Bias Us).

We're upfront: WhichRanks earns revenue through affiliate partnerships and clearly-labeled sponsored content. When you click a "Try Free" or "Get Deal" button, we sometimes earn a commission at no cost to you. That's how we keep the site free.

But here's the rule that's never crossed: brands cannot pay for better rankings. Affiliate commissions don't decide who wins our comparisons. Sponsored content is labeled. And our scoring rubric — the one our editors actually use — was written before any deal was negotiated. Read the full editorial policy.

  • No paid rankings. Brands cannot purchase placement in our rankings. Period. Not the #1 spot, not the top three, not anywhere.
  • Affiliate links are marked. Every promotional link is clearly labeled "Ad" or "Sponsored." Transparency over click-throughs.
  • Methodology is public. Our scoring rubric is published. Anyone can see how we weight value, performance, support, and trust. No black boxes.
  • We update when we're wrong. Mistakes happen. When they do, we correct the page publicly and date the update. Your trust is the asset we can't replace.
