Four Formats. Same Standard.

Every guide on WhichRanks falls into one of four formats — depending on what you're actually trying to do. All four use the same testing-first, current-pricing methodology that powers our reviews and comparisons.

B

Buying Guides.

"What should I buy?" The deepest format — covers the whole landscape, helps you pick the right category, and points you to specific products that fit your needs.

12 guides
H

How-To Guides.

"How do I do this?" Step-by-step walkthroughs for specific tasks — setting up Shopify, configuring a VPN, building your first email list. Action-oriented with screenshots.

10 guides
S

Strategy Guides.

"What should my approach be?" Higher-level thinking on attribution, capsule wardrobes, points programs, and other multi-decision frameworks that pay off over years.

6 guides
G

Glossary & Basics.

"What does this term even mean?" Plain-English explainers of the jargon — TCP vs UDP, foam densities, RJ45 vs fiber, story points vs t-shirt sizing. Quick reference.

Guide Questions.

Seven questions readers ask most about our buying guides and how-tos. For anything not covered here, the contact page is the right next step.

Reviews evaluate a single brand or product across our 8-axis rubric — a deep score-and-verdict on one specific thing. Comparisons put two brands head-to-head with side-by-side pricing and feature tables. Guides are broader: they walk you through a decision, a setup, or a strategy without locking in to specific brands. A guide might recommend "Shopify or WooCommerce, depending on X" — a comparison would tell you which one wins for your specific use case.
Every guide has a "Last Updated" date visible at the top. We refresh pricing every 30 days per our methodology, and we do full guide rewrites at least annually — sooner if a major brand changes (e.g., a Shopify pricing tier shift triggers an immediate update to our eCommerce guide). Older guides that we haven't reviewed in 6+ months are clearly marked. You'll always see the most recent revision date front and center.
No. Brand recommendations inside guides follow the same independence rules as our reviews and comparisons: brands cannot pay for inclusion, scoring is locked before commercial conversations, and affiliate links are clearly labeled. If a guide recommends a specific brand, it's because our editors believe it's actually the right pick — not because the affiliate commission is higher. See our editorial policy for the full framework.
Each guide is owned by the category lead with real industry experience — not a generalist with an SEO outline. Marcus Patel (Tech & SaaS, formerly a software engineer for ten years), Amara Williams (Security, former cybersecurity consultant), James Thornton (Travel, twelve years in travel industry analytics), Priya Sharma (Home, former interior designer), and Elena Rodriguez (Fashion, journalist with Vogue Business credits). See the full team on our About page.
Absolutely — and we read every suggestion. Our editorial team prioritizes guide topics based on reader requests, traffic data, and category gaps. If there's a decision you're struggling with and you don't see a guide for it, tell us via the contact page. Roughly 30% of new guides each year come directly from reader-suggested topics.
No. Every guide on WhichRanks has a named human author who takes responsibility for accuracy and recommendations. We use AI tools for research assistance and first-pass drafting where it helps, but verdicts, brand recommendations, and testing observations come from human editors using our testing methodology. Section 06 of our editorial policy spells out the exact boundaries of AI use.
Beginner guides assume no prior knowledge — they define terms, walk you through every step, and recommend defaults rather than nuanced trade-offs. Intermediate guides assume basic familiarity with the category and dig into trade-offs and choices. Advanced guides assume you've made foundational decisions and dig into edge cases, optimization, and the nuances that 5% of readers care about. The difficulty badge on each guide card tells you which to expect.
